John “Jack” David Ozmon, 83, of Yardville NJ, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2021 at home, surrounded and comforted by his loving family.
Born in Trenton NJ, Jack later moved to Mercerville and graduated from Hamilton HS West, where he played varsity football, soccer, and basketball; he was also a member of the Chess club and participated in other clubs and activities. After he graduated, Jack joined the US Navy, where he served on the Destroyer USS Lowry DD-770 and saw the world. As a machinist’s mate, this was a very influential experience that shaped his passions for the rest of his life. He also documented his naval journey and the amazing places he visited with his newfound passion for photography, of which there are hundreds of beautiful slides.
After his military service, Jack became a Tool and Die maker, starting his craft at a shop in Trenton, where he became a journeyman. He was always proud of his work on a major project there supporting NASA missions in the 1960s. Jack later landed a career with the General Motors Fischer Body plant in Ewing NJ, where he became a local UAW member and worked until retirement after 25 years. At GM, Jack quickly became known for his talent and problem-solving expertise. The engineering group regularly sought Jack to support development projects because of his gift for identifying and solving problems, prior to release to production. He was always proud of a couple of projects where he battled with engineering and in the end was proven to be correct and garnered praise from the engineering manager. Jack eventually rose to the top of his trade as a Master Mold Maker.
After retirement, Jack and his wife Gladys moved to the beautiful coast of NC, enjoying coastal living for almost 30 years, before returning to NJ in late 2020. He was thrilled to move back home to be close to family, as well as reminisce about his many friends and memories.
A true renaissance man, Jack possessed many talents and artistic skills that he continuously pursued outside of his trade. His passions included furniture, cabinet, and clock making. He specialized in projects involving complex joinery and shaping. He was always making projects for friends and family. One year, every member of the family received a wall clock, whether they asked for it or not. He dabbled in many other complex woodworking projects. For a period of time, Jack built humidor cabinets and through word of mouth began receiving so many orders he ended up not being able to keep up with the demand. Other project favorites were intricate ornamental pieces and dollhouses.
Jack was also a master gardener and chef. He raised almost every type of produce imaginable in the backyard garden, which grew in size almost every year and he soon began supplying friends, family, coworkers, and the neighborhood with produce. Jack was legendary at GM for the homemade meals he served when working weekends. He was also an avid golfer for many years and won multiple club and league tournaments, as well as recording a hole-in-one.
Son of the late Walter and Anna (Chato) Ozmon, and late siblings Walter Ozmon and
Joan (Ozmon) Rogers, Jack is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Gladys Luizzi Ozmon, his children
Mary Anne Grove and husband Sam, John Ozmon, David Ozmon and wife Lisa, Gwyneth Ozmon, and
Amy Wilkinson and husband Kal. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alexandra, Matthew, and
Tegan Cenni, Hannah and Aidan Ozmon, Ava and Lily Wilkinson, Patrick Ozmon, his fur baby, Gabby, as well as nephew and nieces Glenn Rogers, Amanda Rogers Parady, and Ilona Ozmon.
The family is planning a private ceremony followed by burial at the Brigadier General William C Doyle
Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
