Margaret Carney

August 11, 1936 - June 2, 2019

Margaret Carney of Columbus passed away Sunday June 2 at 9:30 am with two of her children at her side. Born in Newark in 1936, she married James Carney in 1955. They moved to Lyndhurst in 1960 where they raised their 4 children and where Margaret lived for nearly 50 years before moving to Columbus.

Margaret was an at-home Mom for many years before entering the workforce in the mid 1970’s. She eventually worked for several firms in NYC as an administrative assistant and then retired in 1991. She also worked several years with her son James as a receptionist in his accounting office.

Margaret was active in the Woman’s Rights Movement in the 1970’s and 1980’s and also volunteered hosting several children from the Fresh Air Fund for 2 weeks over several summers.

Margaret lived a simple life herself, but instilled in her children that the world is full of possibilities. She is survived by her 4 children James, Eileen, Tracy and Michael; four grandchildren Sean, Benjamin, Oliver and Sarah and 2 siblings Dennis Kelly and Patricia Afflitto as well as her cat Helen who was a dear companion and provided Margaret great comfort to the end.

Those who knew and loved Margaret will miss her dearly, but are enriched beyond measure for the love, wisdom and kindness that she imparted.

Margaret’s family would like to give special thanks to Charlotte Kahn who guided Margaret to find true peace and contentment through many decades of her life.

Also words cannot express the gratitude the family has for Michele Fuller who befriended and aided Margaret in her final years and Frank Mansell who brought around the clock sunshine to Margaret in her final months. Surely heaven holds a special place for Michele and Frank.

In lieu of flowers donations to Margaret’s favorite charity Heifer International (www.Heifer.org) are most welcome. They provide sustainable solutions to world hunger and poverty by giving communities the means to be self-sustaining.
