John H. Gilmer, 87, of Columbus, NJ, passed away at home on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Born in Pleasantville, NJ, and raised in Jenkintown, PA, John moved to the Trenton area in 1963. Over the years, he resided in Groveville and North Hanover Township before most recently making his home in Columbus.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army. A dedicated public servant, he was an active volunteer with the Yardville First Aid Squad and the Groveville Fire Department and was a founding member of the Jacobstown Fire Department. His leadership and commitment to the fire service extended beyond the local level, as he served as President of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association and was also involved with the National Fire Chiefs Association.
In addition to his service, John was a member of the Wrightstown Rotary Club, the New Egypt Elks, and was a former member of the Jacobstown Elementary School Board,where he formed many lasting friendships.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife and treasured every moment spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He took great pride in being present for their lives and never missed an opportunity to support them at their events.
Predeceased by his parents, Charles F. Gilmer and Edith (Adams) Gilmer; brother, Charles F. Gilmer; son-in-law, David Layton; and his beloved wife, Anna Gilmer; he is survived by his children, John D. (Barbara) Gilmer, Mark A. (Christine F.) Gilmer, and Susan Layton; grandchildren, Annaliese Layton and fiancé Matthew Falco, Erik (Amanda) Layton, Emily A. (Adam) Bonomo, Jack Gilmer, Cody Gilmer; a sister-in-law, Jean Gilmer; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
All services are private and under the direction of the Buklad-Merlino Memorial Homes, Hamilton.
