John A. Margicin, Sr., 98, of Hamilton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at Serenity Hospice Inpatient Unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Trenton, John lived in Hamilton Township for 65 years. He graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School and Rider University. A proud and honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served in Germany with the occupation forces after World War II. He was also a member of American Legion Post 1000.
John was employed for 30 years as an Industrial Engineer with U.S. Steel Corporation, Fairless Works in Fairless, PA, until his retirement. After retiring, he spent eight years working as a substitute teacher for the Hamilton Township School District.
He was a devoted member of St. Raphael’s Roman Catholic Church, where he was a daily communicant and served as Director of Religious Education for 20 years. John taught Religious Education for more than 40 years. He was also an active member of the Holy Name Society and the Nocturnal Adoration Society, as well as a Lector and Lay Minister of Holy Communion. In addition, he brought Communion to the sick at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.
He also served as Treasurer and President of the First Catholic Slovak Union, Branch 102 of Trenton, a position he held for more than 50 years. He was a member of both the Trenton Religious Education Directors and the National Association of Religious Education Directors. John was a Past President of the Holy Name Society of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish and a Past President of the Trenton Serra Club.
Since 1999, he had been the Director of the St. Raphael Food Pantry. In 2012, he volunteered to become the coordinator of the St. Raphael–Holy Angels Adoration Chapel.
Predeceased by his parents John J. and Mary (Toth) Margicin; sister, Mary Sujansky; brothers-in-law, Michael Sujansky and Vincent Staudinger; in-laws, Margaret and George Pregg and May and Joseph Spett; brother-in-law, George Spett; and his beloved wife Olga (Spett) Margicin.
John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John A. Jr. and Idamis “Ida” Margicin; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia “Cyndy” and David Carroll, and Anne and Raymond Allison; grandson, Andrew Allison; and his beloved sister, Eleanor Staudinger; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and again Thursday, December 4, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the Buklad-Merlino Yardville Memorial Home, 30 Yardville-Allentown Road, Yardville.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, December 4, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Raphael Church, 3500 South Broad Street, Hamilton, NJ.
Interment will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Hamilton.
