December 5, 1948 - November 5, 2024
James Craig Raywood of Lawrenceville, NJ, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024. Born on December 5, 1948, in Trenton, New Jersey, James grew up on Murray Street, where he developed the humor, resilience, and dedication that would come to define his life. He spent a decade living in Northern California, an area that always held a special place in his heart.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, James enlisted in the Marines as a teenager and bravely served two tours, exemplifying the Semper Fidelis spirit through his unwavering loyalty to his country and fellow Marines. His service took him across the world—from South Carolina and San Diego to Okinawa, Vietnam, and Los Angeles—each place strengthening the deep sense of honor he carried throughout his life.
After his military service, James pursued his love of aviation at Miami Dade College before entering the world of horse racing. He worked in communications from coast to coast with The Daily Racing Form. Later, he found his stride as a data analyst with Pharmanet and the US Postal Service, where his sharp mind and dedication left a lasting legacy.
James was known for his comical nature, bringing warmth and laughter wherever he went. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees and San Francisco 49ers, he spent decades running fantasy drafts with friends and family, signing off as “The Commish” with his signature phrase, “Great to be alive!”
James is survived by his children, Andre Raywood and Larissa (Raywood) Orso, and their mother, Lida Sharp; his son-in-law, Paolo Orso; and his beloved grandchildren, Vera and Orlando, who affectionately know him as “Grandpa Jimmy.” He is also survived by his brother, William J. Raywood III; his nephews, William and Robert Raywood; Robert’s wife, Vincenza; and their children. James was predeceased by his parents, William J. Raywood Jr. and Jean Laarz Raywood, and his sister, Cheryl L. Raywood.
James’s life will be honored with a graveside service at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA, 18940, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, gathering at 11:15am for a prompt 11:30am start with full military honors.
A casual celebration of life will follow, where friends and family are invited to share stories, memories, and laughter.
