 Antonita Alexander (“Toni”), 92, of Chesterfield passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026 at Serenity Hospice Inpatient Unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.

 

Born in Marion, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and raised in the historic fishing and whaling town of New Bedford, Massachusetts for many years, where she met her husband while he was serving in the United States Air Force. Following their marriage, the couple traveled extensively with the military, living in various parts of the country as well as in England, before ultimately settling in New Jersey where he was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base.

 

Toni lovingly raised her daughters and son in New Jersey and remained a longtime resident of the Burlington County area.

 

She was employed by the federal government at Fort Dix, where she served as the Director of the Base Realignment Analysis Study. Her efforts were directly responsible for keeping McGuire Air Force Base open, along with Fort Dix and Lakehurst. She was also appointed by the Pentagon Department of Defense for Installation to serve as their Army representative to execute Base closings and implement all realignment closures and actions findings. She retired after many years of dedicated service.

 

In retirement, she relocated to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter, before most recently returning to Chesterfield to be closer to her family.

 

Toni was an exceptional cook who found great joy in preparing meals and caring for those she loved. Nothing meant more to her than time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored and cherished deeply.

 

Predeceased by her parents, Manuel Fonseca Nascimento and Candida (Duarte) Nascimento; her sisters Elizabeth Amado, Mary Pina and Eugenia Nascimento; her brothers Joseph Rose, Arthur Rose, Walter Rose and Manuel Nascimento; and her children, Richard Manuel Alexander and Sheryl Jane Hoggan; she is survived by her daughter, Joan Marie Nelson; four grandchildren, Richard Lynn, Christian Nelson, Kimberlie Lynch, and Christina Hoggan; four great grandchildren, Matthew and Mariah Lynch, Timothy and Michael Collins; as well as other relatives and dear friends.

A Celebration of Life event will be held at the home of Matt and Kim Lynch.

 

Cremation was under the direction of the Buklad-Merlino Memorial Homes, Hamilton, NJ.

Antonita "Toni" was my irmã di korason — my sister of the heart — from our junior high school days straight into womanhood. Our bond had that Cape Verdean depth, the kind that grows with you, protects you, and stays rooted no matter how life changes.

She lived with quiet dignity, but she was small only in size — never in spirit. She was mighty, bold‑hearted, and could stand her ground with anyone, no matter how tall or loud they were. That strength carried into her work, where she served her country with honor.
