Anthony (Tony) Herrera, 88, of Trenton, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Helene Fuld Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Trenton, Tony was a proud New Jerseyan through and through. One of nine children, he grew up in a large, lively household that shaped his love of family and deep appreciation for close‑knit relationships. He worked for the State of New Jersey throughout his career before retiring. With a quiet warmth that drew people in, Tony had a gift for connecting with people, whether at home or far away on vacations, he always seemed to run into someone he knew.
Tony was also an avid walker, logging thousands of miles in all kinds of weather well into his 80s. A lifelong sports fan, he loved cheering for the New York Rangers, the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Yankees. Whether it was baseball, football, or hockey, Tony enjoyed every moment spent watching his favorite teams.
Tony’s greatest joy in life was his family. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and happiness. He cherished being part of a large, close‑knit family and held tight to the bonds that shaped his life.
Tony was predeceased by his parents, Dionisio and Jennie (Russo) Herrera; his brothers, Frank, Dick, Lou, Bob, Dan, Jerry, and Tito; his sisters‑in‑law, Dottie, Audrey, Tracy, Emily, Ann, Joan, and Ann Johnson; his brother‑in‑law, Dennis; his nephews, Hondo, Tommy, and Steve; and his niece, Frankie Rae. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 63 years, Cherry, and his children, Stephen Herrera and wife, Wilma, Diana Williams, Andrew Herrera and wife, Jolene, and Christopher Herrera. Tony is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda and partner Andrew, Kelcey and husband Tyler, Ian, Jeremy, Joshua and wife Ashley, and Isabella; his beloved great‑grandchildren, Kilian, Jameson, and Stella; his sister Amelia and husband, Paul; sister‑in‑law, Sally; brother‑in‑law, Alex and wife, Roz; as well as many nieces, nephews, great‑nieces, great‑nephews, and dear friends.
Tony will be remembered as a friendly face, a kind soul, and a man whose love for his family never wavered, even if his jokes were terrible. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, 11:00 am, at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, 555 Yardville Allentown Rd. Yardville, NJ 08620.
Arrangments are under the direction of the Buklad-Merlino Memorial Homes, Hamilton, NJ.
